Raised On Rice & Gravy

Next Wednesday, March 11, at 8:30 pm, LPB will deliver the statewide broadcast premier of "Raised on Rice and Gravy," the latest documentary film produced by the Cinematic Arts Workshop here at UL Lafayette. Also, tonight at 7:00 pm, LPB's weekly news show, "Louisiana: The State We're In" will feature a story about the making of the film and interviews with the artists behind it.

Like all the programming produced by the Workshop, this documentary is the result of collaboration from students, faculty, and staff from several different disciplines within the UL Lafayette community. The lead artists for "Raised on Rice and Gravy" are co-directors Conni Castille, a graduate of the English Department's Folklore Studies masters program, and Allison Bohl, a graduate of our Visual Arts department. The research and production for this program were funded in part by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts.

A new documentary film celebrating what has become a daily dining tradition in Lafayette, the humble plate lunch house.


“ People used to come home to eat lunch with their families,” explained folklorist Conni Castille, the film’s co-director. “For farmers and laborers, it was an important daily ritual to sit down and share the midday meal at home. That’s not possible today, so neighborhood plate lunch houses have become a substitute for that in South Louisiana culture.”
